You know you’re living in strange times when you try to hire musicians and get turned down twice in a row because the songs are about human rights, freedom and the fight against fascism — because someone prefers to stay “neutral” or claims not to agree with the message.

What, exactly, is there to disagree with?

Do you like fascism? Take a ride in a time capsule and visit Germany in 1933.

Do you dislike human rights? Then watch your neighbour being deported to “Alligator Alcatraz” or subjected to other atrocities.

Do you dislike freedom? Sorry — you’re delusional, and I’m done talking to you.

When will people finally understand that there is no such thing as neutrality?

Paul Watzlawick said that it is impossible not to communicate. The same applies to so-called neutrality. Whatever you do — or choose not to do — affects the world around you.

And to those who will inevitably start chanting the old mantra of “stick to music”:

L’art pour l’art is a nice idea in peaceful, comfortable times. Times like these demand that we take a stand — otherwise we’ll soon find ourselves sliding back into the Stone Age!
